|getty_description=Moissac was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. French pilgrimage routes to Compostela tend to follow old Roman roads, many of which continued to be utilized as primary roads of communication during the Middle Ages. This location is situated on what once was a strategic point of the main land and water routes in the mid-Garonne region connecting Toulouse to Bordeaux. Moissac is the site of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Pierre-de-Moissac, which was consecrated in 1180 and the former parish church of Saint Martin.
